Acne Blue Light  & Acne Scar Treatment – Newport Beach

Acne Treatment & Acne Scars – Acne is a disorder caused by the anaerobic bacterium propinibacterium acnes (P. acnes), that along with your hormones and foreign substances from your environment lead to severely clogged skin pores that often surface as visible lumps. Laser treatments and various skin treatments such as microdermabrasion and chemical peels can help improve acute  acne eruptions and scarring. Acne affects teenagers and adults in their 20s and 40s. When left untreated, acne not only leads to physical scarring but also psychological scarring. Treating acne early and often is important to avoid serious permanent scarring and to regain your smooth and more even clear skin.

Acne Blue Light BBL infrared energy promotes reduced inflammation and growth of P. acnes bacteria by heating the subepithetial layers using board band light filtered from the 420nm of the light spectrum.  With proper treatment, the procedure will lead a decrease in  red pustular eruptions or comedones and  the inflammed, discolored appearance of the skin.  The procedure takes about 15 minutes and there is no down time associated the BlueLight treatment so, one can quickly return to normal activities while being careful to avoid unnecessary sun exposure and wear suncreen. We recommend treatment be done every two weeks for a series until the pustules and inflammation are gone with regular follow up and skin analysis with our nurse esthetician for maintenance. Additionally, a recent article has shown that restriting the dietary intake of sugar, dairy products and processed meats reduce pustular acne outbreaks. This is important in order to prevent the progression toward irregular texture or “ice pick or box car” scarring of the skin.  Once acutely inflammed acne is controlled using the BlueLight (420 nanometer)BBL, then deeper resurfacing techniques using  the ProFractional , MicroLaserPeel or Contour TRL laser techniques can be employed to  induce collagen remodeling, proliferate of active stem cells and fibroblasts  which  result in  improvment of acne scars or wrinkles and development of  an overall smoother appearance of the skin.

ProFractional, MicroLaserPeel, and Contour TLR Laser Treatments

Contour Tunable Laser Resurfacing , MicroLaserPeel  or ProFractional  laser devices use the 2940 wavelenght and  are especially well suited for deep skin defects, such as unevenly textured  acne scars and heavy wrinkles. Theses procedures involves photodyanmic evaporation of the top layers of the skin to a preselected depth and penetrates the skin more deeply than superficial treatments like microdermabrasion.  The wound healing process recruits new stem cells and fibroblasts to plumb up the skin , resulting in a fresher and smoother texture of the scars or wrinkles.  The new skin that appears is pink at first, but gradually develops a normal appearance. Most patients heal , depending on the depth of the treatment, within 3 days to two weeks. It’s important for patients avoid sun and to wear a boardsprectrum sunscreen with  zinc and titanium (SPF of 45 or higher) to protect their fresh, new skin and avoid post treatment complications.
Pre-care & Post Care for ProFractional, MicroLaserPeel, andContour TRL:

Some form of topical anesthetic (numbing cream) is usually required prior to treatment. An anesthetic cream is applied up to  30 minutes  before the procedure and works very well. Oral sedatives or painkillers may also be used to minimize any discomfort. For deeper treatments, we may administer a subcutaneous local anesthetic. Additionally, anti-viral prophylaxis is generally give.

After treating your  acne scars with these deeper resurfacing techniques, there may be a mild burning sensation for several hours that is usually well tolerated. The treated area using ProFractional may have pin  point bleeding for a few hours, particularly if rubbed. For best results and once re-epithetialization has occurred in about 3-4 days then, you should avoid the sun thereafter and use a titanium and zinc oxide sun sunscreen every day to maintain results.

If doing a laser  resurfacing treatment, your skin will be cleaned in the treatment area and your eyes will be protected with safety shields. We will position the laser handpiece above the skin and will hold it in place as the computer-guided scanner moves the laser beam around the treatment area. Depending on the size and depth of the area being treated, the procedure usually lasts 15 to 45 minutes.

Immediately following the procedure you may experience redness and a sensation resembling sunburn. Swelling may also occur in the treated areas. We will advise you on specific after-treatment care recommendations, which may include analgesics, prohylatic medications and application of an ointment to keep the skin moist. Follow up with our nurse esthetician is recommended.

How long will it take to recover?

Complete healing will depend largely on the depth and size of treatment. Healing times for shallow treatments are typically 3-4 days before patients resume normal activities. For deeper treatments, you should discuss realistic expectations for recovery with your physician.

The top layer of your skin will re-grow and can be covered with makeup in about one week, at which time you will see noticeable improvements in your skin’s texture, tone and wrinkle appearance. Deeper laser treatments also stimulate the growth of new collagen over the next 4 to 6 months. During this time, your skin will show increasing improvements in tightness and resilience.

Immediately after the MicroLaserPeel or Countour TLR treatment you will notice that the skin has a “frosty” appearance. This is the dehydrated skin that will peel away within next few days following the treatment. You may experience some skin redness and a sensation resembling sunburn, as well as mild swelling. You may be given skin care products and instructions on how to use them. Your skin will be sensitive to ultra- violet light after the procedure, so you must avoid direct sun exposure until fully healed.

It is recommended that you always use board spectrum  solar protection containing zinc and titanium and to avoid sun  which damages and leads to premature aging of your skin. Because only the outer layer of skin is treated, most patients notice an obvious improvement in tone, texture and color evenness once the skin heals in approximately 3- 7 days.
